Hamilton Island Golf Club: Sun, sand, and sweet swings

Sun, sand, and sweet swings. For those golfers who enjoy a tropical setting with your shot-making, you’ll be at home at Hamilton Island Golf Club.

This beautiful course regularly makes the Top 100 rankings in Australia and for good reason. Each hole has its own spectacular views of the surrounding Whitsunday Islands, which sit off the Queensland coast and next to the wondrous Great Barrier Reef.

The course is actually located on Dent Island. After being pampered by the resort staff on Hamilton Island, you’ll take the 10-minute ferry ride across to the clubhouse.

The beautiful setting belies the challenges that await. The course is tough off all tees with the par 3s the signature holes here. Keep it straight – danger lies on each side of the fairways but the landing areas are generous enough. The Irish or Barnbougle lost-ball rule is followed where you place a lost ball from the point of entry for a 1-stroke penalty. We played in a group of 28 over two days and the accumulated ‘lost-ball’ category was an amazing 315!

The back nine holes are spectacular with the 14th and 16th par 3 holes standouts. On the 14th, you’ll have to clear 143 metres over a ravine (very similar to the Old course 7th at the National in Victoria) and you’ll be rewarded with awesome views of both sides of Dent Island. (View pictures and video here).

An open-air clubhouse and luncheon dining adds to the overall experience.
