St. Wendel

St. Wendel

Description:
Located near Germany’s western border with France, St. Wendel is a golf destination that features a 27-hole championship layout and a nine-hole par-3 course on a 150-hectare (370-acre) site. Naturally, the focus is on the former three by nine-hole combination. Holes 1, 9, 10, 18,19 and 27 arrive or depart from the clubhouse, making it easy to divide your round up. The view from the clubhouse is something to behold, too, taking in a course that is set out over hills, thick forest and lakes.

St. Wendelinus, after whom the town is named, is the Patron Saint of herdsman and country people so he may not be the best holy person to pray to to keep your scoring low here. And your game will be tested on this course, which was designed by Wolfgang Jersombeck.

“The 27 holes offer some of the most boisterous golf I’ve played,” said German golf writer Ulrich Mayring. “The excitement just never stops – every hole is a complete thrill. St. Wendel is a great retreat in the summer heat because it is at a bit of an altitude.”

The challenges: You’ll find trouble of all sorts off the tee unless you control your ball. There are both green-side and fairway bunkers to contend with, plus holes where you’ll have to fly the ball over water.
When to play: Try to visit during the dryer months, April through to September. The course can quickly become unplayable in wet conditions, according to Ulrich Mayring. November is the wettest month.
Par: Three combinations of two nine-hole courses to make up par 72.
Yardage: Course A+B 6570 yards, 6008 meters; Course C+A 6827 yards, 6243 meters; Course B+C 6851 yards, 6265 meters.
Slope: Course A+B 135; Course C+A 138; Course B+C 137
Rating: Course A+B 72.2; Course C+A 73.4; Course B+C 73.7
Best hole: Hole 9 on course A has a nasty fairway bunker on the right side before the dogleg left. Another long bunker sits in front of the green as well as a lake directly in front of the putting surface, testing your distance control.
The resort experience:
Angel’s Hotel is a modern building with four-star services throughout its 46 rooms. The designers gave attention to using low-allergy materials in items such as comforters and pillows. The bathrooms feature natural stone with a shower or tub. Each room comes with a spectacular view.
Dine and wine: St Wendel’s restaurant offers fine gourmet dining. Mains include a glazed duck breast served with onion vanilla confit and nutty potato purée as well as a homemade pasta with tarragon, peas, garlic and bacon. Then finish off with an apple strudel with ice cream and vanilla sauce. You’ll also find a bistro menu with quicker meals such as burgers and schnitzels. The breakfast is included in your room fee.

The accommodation: Modern and chic hotel rooms that are designed for singles or couples.

Other activities: The resort is geared towards golfers but the wellness and relaxation center has 14 packages to pamper yourself or your partner. “Warm-hearted” is a fine choice – you get full-body exfoliation, a bath in a luxury tub, followed by a hot-stone massage. If you are feeling more adventurous, try one of the many hiking trails around St Wendel and the Saar-Hunsrück nature park, or take the children to the nearby Gondwana Dinosaur Park, which is fantastic.
